One of the things NLP does is to show you how your conscious mind and subconscious mind are being connected through the neural routes by which you behave in your daily life.
There can be a suitable example of stating this fact. If you have observed rain , you will see whenever we flow water in the ground, it takes certain path and no matter how much water we pour, it will take that path only. With the continuous flow of water a ditch is created by the flow of water, which eventually changed or filled up when the water dried up. Similar kind of actions happen in the brain as well, your daily thoughts, daily actions create a groove in the neurons of brain and NLP can change your neural paths in your brain. In fact your brain is changing all the time, which is known as “neuroplasticity of the brain”.
Usually it takes a long time to get rid of a bad habit. This is because you’re doing unconsciously without being aware of it. Well, in NLP techniques and tolls a habit can disappear in few weeks..
Here are some tips to train your mind differently that are being taught here in NLP India. These are not simple affirmations that might take even more than 6 months. Writing or chanting affirmations do not help unless and until you give entire attention to the affirmations, and most of the people lose patiencemid-way. But there are some tricks and tips that can surely help you.
1.Pick and Choose One Behavior (The Habit) Is That You Want To Change
You may have 20 bad habits, or 10 negative attributes that you would like to change about you, but in the start be wise and choose one habit or behavior. While picking and choosing one habit, first concentrate and focus on yourself and then draw attention to the habits you have and ask yourself what is that one habit that is bothering you so much, and you choose that particular one.
2. To Analyse the purpose of old habits
In NLP it is known as secondary gain. Ask yourself this question repeatedly. What is the purpose of this particular old habit. Why this old habit gives you such a pleasure. Like sugar addiction, why can’t you leave sugar? What kind of pleasure it is giving you? What is the lack that is being fulfilled by sugar addiction? Why do you feel good when you have 4 scoops of ice cream when you know you are diabetic? This is best done by keeping a close watch of what were you thinking and feeling when you start craving for the food or ate that food. This will bring into consciousness this unconscious behavior.
3. Be aware of the Mental Image
This is easy to do, but you must be precise. Here is the question to ask you: “As I think of how much I like ice cream, do I have a picture in my mind of any ice cream?” be sure of one fact that everybody has a picture in their mind of their comfort food or favorite food. Close your eyes and see the image of your favorite food. Try to visualize where is the picture located, is it far away from you or it is close to you.
4. Change the Image
Now, take that image of your comfort food or favorite food and move it far away, 10 feet away, make it really small like a stamp or like a grain of sugar or lentil make it black, and leave it there. Stick it there with glue.
5. Bring attention on Something New
Start giving energy, attention to something different, like start thinking of music or a painting whenever you feel the craving of having that ice cream. It is going to take some time, but when you practice it daily, eventually you will manage to do that. There will be time when you simply won’t be able to resist the craving of sugar, have a sweet orange or a banana and imagine you are actually eating something sugary and you are feeling good. Visualize that image this sweet orange is making you slim, beautiful, you are fitted in your old jeans.
